I was so excited to get to talk to Dr. Michelle Segar for this episode of the podcast. I heard about Michelle's work last year when I began researching the science of exercise motivation in an effort to figure out what went wrong when a bunch of my half marathoners quit their training program after getting that horrible flu, and getting caught up in the stress of the winter and holiday seasons. I had never had this happen before, but it turns out, this phenomenon is fairly common.
Dr. Segar's work kept popping up as I dug into the research, and I had an opportunity to hear her speak in person at the IDEA World fitness convention in San Diego this summer. Her book, No Sweat, is incredible, and her presentation at the conference included some new graphics and analogies that really hit home.
As you know, I am passionate about the benefits of exercise because movement can transform lives. So I'm always intrigued when I can talk to someone who has spent an entire career studying the question... "How do we create sustainable behavior change?"
I talked to Michelle about how the fitness industry gets it wrong, why weight loss isn't a good long term motivator, how we close the gap between what we value and say we need (exercise or nutrition for example) and our behavior (giving up after 3 weeks because life got busy, for example), how to change the way we think about exercise, thinking about exercise as a gift (rather than a chore), and the importance of self care and talking to our friends and loved ones about the little details of our lives.
You'll want to have a pen and paper nearby when you listen because Michelle shares fabulous insight that will help you set your sights on a goal and stick with it long after the initial goal has been achieved.
You can listen on the player below, or on iTunes, Google Play, Sound Cloud and Spotify. And SUBSCRIBE while you are there because I have more people who have incredible insight booked in the coming weeks! (And, if you enjoy what you're hearing, it would mean the world to me if you would rate and review this podcast on iTunes too!)
Thank you for reading, for listening and for sticking with me on this journey. I appreciate YOU and hope your week is FABULOUS!
xoxo,
Coach Kim
